Dungeon Runner series #1
Kit has always dreamed of being a Dungeon Runner, much like his elderly grandfather, but his small statue and non-experience make him an unlikely candidate. When a space for a new team opens up in the Bottom Feeders league, Kit has his chance, only, the odds are stacked against him. He has no abilities, no armor, and no teammates. How could he possibly compete? Where there is a will there is a way! Kit meets Sandy, a sort-of mage and future sea hag, who also longs for a chance in the big leagues. Next the team is joined by Thorn, a young vegan vampire with some healing abilities. The fresh team dubs themselves Triple Trouble and throws their hats into the competition. The Dragon Runners trial is harsh and their opponents are fierce. The new team must depend on each other, follow their instincts, and accept help from unexpected places. Can they possibly beat the other more powerful teams, especially the town bullies?
I am constantly on the look-out for series that will encourage readers to get off the videogames and into books with actual words and not just pictures. This British import is a perfect series to encourage the transition to proper chapter books that will appeal to video game and graphic novel lovers. The volume is attractively designed and contains a cartoon-like illustration on nearly every page, yet also has full pages of text and a linear story. The action never wavers and readers will root for our underdog heroes as they battle the forces of evil and make their dreams come true. Gentle humor will satisfy Dogman fans and the large print keeps the pages turning. There is a map, a secret mirror code with a puzzle at the end and a sneak-peek to the next series installment to keep readers going. The third in the series was released recently and a fourth installment is expected for April. Who says reading can’t be exciting and fun? This series is the perfect choice for reluctant readers who think they would rather be playing video games and a wonderful introduction into the world of adventurous fantasy.
